I caught this guy hanging out in the yard after a big rain storm. I guess his wings were too wet and he didn’t have the power to fly away yet. Hopefully he was able to dry off and have new adventures.
Today I was able to witness the final stage of the butterfly life cycle. One of the Swallowtail butterflies decided to stop in and hangout for a bit on the tree that served as its host. Notice in the background an empty pupa that was home to either him or one of his friends.
He was very patient while I excitedly snapped photo after photo of him. I love his under wing coloring.
Finally, he got tired of me harassing him and flew off. Luckily I got this motion photo.
A very unusual caterpillar has been eating the crap out of our grapefruit tree. I killed two of them before I discovered that they are the caterpillar of the swallowtail butterfly.
I discovered two chrysalis and one other caterpillar chowing down. I am going to let the tree get abused for now, besides it gives us no fruit anyway. I love butterflies.
